BENDING TOWARDS THE LIGHT ... A JAZZ NATIVITY

This production, created by the singer Anne Phillips and the saxophonist Bob Kindred, tells the story of Christmas through jazz. Its august cast features the conga master Candido, the tenor saxophonist and flutist Frank Wess and the pianist Hank Jones - all recognized as National Endowment for the Arts Jazz masters - along with a number of others.

"Bending Towards the Light…A Jazz Nativity"  is performed with a cast of sixteen musicians and singers many of whom play multiple roles. The singers in the four voice vocal group also play the roles of the host, Mary, Joseph and the Guardian Angels. These singers and the soprano Storyteller, the tap dancing King and the Shepherd Boy  makeup the seven voice choir. Where space allows, a young dancer who portrays the Spirit of Mary may be added. Simple costuming and staging make the effective transitions. In either production other local jazz musicians join in the finale. The show brings together two worlds, the world of theater and the world of jazz. It has been successfully produced in theaters, concert halls and jazz clubs.
